94% of vision loss in indigenous australians unnecessary

Melbourne, Australia, 14 September 2014: Eye health expert, Professor Hugh Taylor, says 94% of vision loss amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is unnecessary in an interview on ABC radio yesterday.

Professor Taylor from the Indigenous Eye Health Unit at University of Melbourne, and a participant in the Vision CRC Models of Vision Care program, says the problem is that over one third of Indigenous adults have never had an eye exam and major conditions like uncorrected refractive error, diabetic retinopathy and cataract could be corrected easily or managed with appropriate intervention.
